Unbound Visual Arts (UVA) utilizes experienced and trained curators and exhibition designers to ensure that all UVA exhibitions are created, designed and installed to ensure that the audience has meaningful and thought-provoking experiences when visiting exhibitions. A major part of Unbound Visual Arts’ mission is to present curated educational art exhibitions on important cultural and social topics, such as wellness, non-violence, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. That mission is a unique means of presenting contemporary art exhibitions. All of UVA’s exhibitions are created to be beneficial to all audiences. We are always looking for new Guest Curators. Send and email cover letter and résumé to Jobs@UnboundVisualArts.org or apply via HireCulture.org. As of 2021, honoraria are provided to UVA’s Guest Curators.
UVA curators, oftentimes guest curators, are the main organizers of UVA exhibitions, both virtual 3D and in-person physical. The curator, if they are also an artist, may not include their art in an exhibit they curate.
Generally, UVA Guest Curators assist in creating contemporary art exhibitions with a purpose that are fun, entertaining and meaningful yet still provide a strong learning environment. Following direction from the Executive Director, the Guest Curator may propose the exhibition themes, storylines, exhibitions titles and individual works of art selected from individual artists, prepare a compelling exhibition statement and sub-statements that are both descriptive and insightful, propose the individual art labels, organize exhibition binders with artist statements and resumes and assist in planning, designing and installing the exhibition. The Guest Curator may, under the direction of the Executive Director, assist in promoting and marketing the exhibition, including the on-line exhibition, as well as selling individual works of art. The Guest Curator may also be asked to lead short gallery talks and discussions. The Guest curator works on-site or remotely for approximately 8-10 hours per week, though there is flexibility in this requirement. Specific duties include, but not limited to, the following:
- Recommend an exhibition theme and educational story lines.
- Recommend the exhibition title that captures the essence of the exhibition.
- Prepare a curator’s statement of approximately 150 words. This is not an artist’s statement, but can include artist’s quotes and ideas.
- Prepare a shorter version of the curator’s statement for the press release (approximately 50-75 words)
- Organize the narrative biography of the artist(s) for the press release
- Prepare a narrative biography of the curator for the press release
- Write a 1-2 sentence summary of the exhibition for postcard
- Write the artwork labels that identifies the individual artwork (artist, title, media, dimensions, price) and a short interpretative statement about the artwork, if applicable
- Make suggestions for art installation and design
- Assist with the installation
- Assist in putting the entire exhibition with images on-line
- Prepare a printed exhibition program, booklet or catalogue that includes the curator’s statement, all artist statements and biographies and a price list.
