Artist Statement:
Today, the existential issues of environmental damage, justice, and peace are burning in the minds of many people. The catastrophic results of these problems are real, alarming, and in need of urgent attention and solutions. As artists, we are duty-bound to do our part in this greatest of challenges.
Clearly, global warming has brought disasters to the environment: rising temperatures, sea level rise, destruction of ecosystems, severe weather, and others. The growing economic inequality in our society bodes more suffering and unrest. Conflicts over race, territory, ideology, and economic power are the bane of civilizations. Yet, to stay unconcerned is a cowardly option, I think.
In my fiber art, I try to convey the stark conditions we are facing through my unique artistic techniques and language. I manipulate my materials with scissors and a sewing machine. Countless stitching, compositional daring, and control bring elements together in unified and aesthetically satisfying results.
